Don't Go There!

DON'T GO THERE

By GV Potter

The following post was written by a member of our fellowship.

Solomon writes, “I perceived among the youths, a young man devoid of understanding, passing along the street near her corner; and he took the path to her house” (Pro. 7:7b-8). This young man’s mistake was being in the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong person.  The message is clear: “If you don’t want to get burned, stay away from the fire!” You can’t get hooked on cocaine if you never use it. You can’t become an alcoholic if you never drink it, and you’re certainly less likely to commit a sin if you don’t allow yourself to get into tempting situations.

Job 23:11 declares, “My foot was held fast to His steps; I have kept his way and not turned aside.” Many of our endevors in life fall short because of our lack of focus. We are our own worst enemy by allowing ourselves to get distracted.  That’s why one of the most important things we can do each day is to renew our minds with God’s Word. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect Will of God” (Rom. 12:2). Make the Word of God your spiritual yardstick, revealing how you measure up to obedience to His Word. When you get that right, everything else will begin to fall into place.  You will begin to think and act differently, and you’ll get different results.

It’s impossible to completely escape from all situations that may be potentially dangerous; but as Martin Luther once said, “You can’t stop the birds from flying over your head, but you can stop them from building a nest in your hair.”  Be mindful that we are all prone to wander.  That’s why God set certain boundaries we should never cross, certain places we should never go, and certain people we should never hang out with.  A good example of this is Proverbs 13:20, which states, “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.” So always remember there’s never a right time to be in a wrong place. Just don’t go there! Instead, spend time hearing, reading and being obedient to God’s Word. You’ll love the results!
