Read Your Bible!

READ YOUR BIBLE!

By GV Potter

The following post was written by a member of our fellowship.

Have you ever wished your life was more effective for Christ? If so, what have you done (or not done) to make it happen? One of the primary catalysts for spiritual growth and becoming an effective witness for Jesus Christ is the reading, and study of God’s Word. However, this won’t happen just by skip-reading and grabbing a verse here or there.  Rather, when you keep your mind on God’s Word as you read and meditate, your questions will be answered, worries will be resolved, and you’ll find more spiritual strength, guidance and understanding each day.

The Bible contains the greatest words ever written or spoken. It’s unique in that God’s Spirit used just over 40 people in various walks in life to write the books of the Bible in a period of about 1500 years. The words of each book are literally “breathed out” by God, as “All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (2 Tim. 3:16).

The Bible is “the Book of all Books.” It’s one of the ways God can speak to you, and here are words that He wants you to hear: “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life,” (John 6:63). Clearly, in order to sustain your life spiritually, scripture must be an active part of your life.  Nothing can take its place.  Reading the Bible must be one of your constant priorities…otherwise you’ll end up right back where you started!

Without a doubt, Satan will do whatever he can to keep you ignorant of God’s word.  He’ll keep you busy with other things so you don’t have time to read your Bible. The most important investment you can make in yourself is reading your Bible every day.  The Bible is the source of nourishment that strengthens your soul and spirit, and they can no more survive without God’s Word than your body can survive without the intake of food and water. You may not feel like getting up and going to work each day to provide for your family, but you know it’s your duty, so you do it. What about your soul and spirit…that part of you that will live forever?  Don’t you have a duty to feed yourself spiritually and stay strong? You say, “But I don’t have time to read the Bible.” (Satan made sure of that). How much time do you spend each day or evening watching TV?  Hours?  If you find television to be more rewarding than God’s Word, your soul and spirit are in need of intensive care and you may not even know it! If you really want to change your life, change your habits and start reading God’s Word.  Begin to do what it says.  When you do, God will bless you (James 1:22-25).

It is in prayer that you talk to God, and conversely, it is through the scriptures that He talks to you!  Don’t live off someone else’s spiritual insights.  Read God’s Word for yourself, and allow His Holy Spirit to bless you with life-changing results. Everything you need to know about life and how to benefit it is in your Bible.  It could be that what you’re looking for is right under your nose, but you don’t even recognize it. To recognize gold and silver ore or precious stones in their natural form, you’ll need to be familiar with their characteristics and know where and what to look for. If you’re searching the scripture for answers, then you’ll need to spend some quality time in reading and studying your Bible to understand what the author is saying.

Get God’s “Helper,” the Holy Spirit involved in your reading of His Word.  Jesus said in John 14:26, “But the Helper, The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” That’s why it’s important, before you open your Bible, to pray for the Holy Spirt to open your Spiritual heart and eyes for understanding. Always be mindful not to go into scripture looking for your own ideas or to poke holes in what you don’t understand.  Instead, search God’s Word as if looking for His “Hidden Treasures” spoken of in Proverbs 2:4-5, “If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasure; then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.” You’ll know that you’re listening, understanding and being obedient to God’s Word when what you read in the Bible is what others see in your life.  You’ll feel spiritual strength within and confidence to be bold, as you’re now better equipped to be a witness for your Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Amen.

I love what you have said so clearly. To change my life read God's word. It is the time I get to be still and hear God speak to me through his word. At the same time I grow closer to Him as I seek to know him better. Thank you again. Great post!!!
